Fibroadenoma
A fibroadenoma is a relatively common, harmless lump in the breast. Fibroadenomas can develop at any age, but they are most common in younger women between 15 and 35.

Typically, the lumps will be small and painless, feeling smooth under the skin and moving around easily with the breast tissue.
Yes, there are three types
- Simple fibroadenoma: These are the most common type. They are roughly 1-3cm in size and don’t increase the likelihood of developing breast cancer.
- Complex fibroadenoma: Less common and more often seen in older patients, complex fibroadenoma may grow over time and could slightly increase your chances of developing breast cancer.
- Giant/juvenile fibroadenoma: These are larger lumps, typically more than 5cm in size.
While a fibroadenoma is harmless, if you find a lump in your breast, it’s always best to get it checked by a specialist.
Ms Varghese will talk to you about your medical history, making sure you have the time and space to feel completely comfortable and heard. Following that, she’ll carry out one or more of the following tests.
- A breast examination: A physical check performed by a doctor to assess any visible or palpable changes in the breast.
- A breast X-ray (Mammogram): This involves taking a clear image of your breast. Your breast will be gently pressed flat under a plastic plate to obtain accurate images. A 3D mammogram may also be performed if you have dense breasts.
- Ultrasound: This imaging scan uses sound waves to create a clear picture of the inside of your breast. It is performed using a hand-held sensor gently applied to the skin.
- Biopsy or Fine Needle Aspiration: This procedure involves removing a small tissue sample for testing by inserting a needle into the breast to reach the lump.
Most fibroadenomas don’t require surgery. For fibroadenomas over 3cm in size we may offer surgical excision. Most of the lesions can be left alone and monitored with imaging. She’ll talk through all options with you and make sure that you’re fully involved at every stage of the decision-making process so that you’re completely happy with your proposed treatment.
