Dense breasts are a common and completely normal finding. Breast density refers to the proportion of glandular and connective tissue compared with fatty tissue within the breast. When there is more glandular and fibrous tissue, the breasts are described as “dense.” This is not something that can be felt during an examination or judged by breast size or firmness; it is identified through breast imaging, most commonly on a mammogram.

Breast density is important for two main reasons. Firstly, dense breast tissue can make mammograms more difficult to interpret because both dense tissue and many breast cancers appear white on the scan. Secondly, women with dense breasts have a slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer compared with women whose breasts contain more fatty tissue. For these reasons, understanding breast density can help guide decisions about screening and imaging.
